Auckland, New Zealand
New Zealand's capital city is home to a third of the country's population - Auckland really is the place to be! The city's diverse population has led to its diverse culture, with inhabitants from South Pacific, Polynesian, European and Asian backgrounds. Located on the North Island of New Zealand, this coastal harbour city is packed full of things to see and do.
Auckland's geography finds it surrounded by hilly rainforest, with Manukau Harbour to the west of the city, and many small islands to the east in the Hauraki Gulf. Several of these islands are popular holiday destinations in themselves, each offering their own attractions for day trips or longer breaks. Waiheke Island is the largest, giving a great taste of the island lifestyle and heritage, while Great Barrier Island has some beautiful beaches, and Goat Island is home to Auckland's marine reserve, an excellent habitat for scuba diving and seeing some of the local wildlife.
To get a taste of Auckland's heritage, try a visit to One Tree Hill, where pre-European Maori dwellings can still be seen today, or walk some of the coast to coast hiking trail to sample the rural New Zealand landscape that borders Auckland.
This unique city is also home to the Southern Hemisphere's tallest building, Sky Tower, providing a spectacular view over the city. Alternatively, nearby Mangere Mountain, a relic from the area's volcanic past, is the best location to find breathtaking panoramas and views across Auckland and the estuary.
When it comes to great holiday destinations, Auckland is an all-round winner!
