Located in South Eastern France, on the Rhone River, Avignon has a long and well documented history. The medieval town is beautifully preserved and still protected by the original city walls.
Whilst wandering around Avignon you'll discover fabulous buildings, wonderful churches, and lots of museums and cafes in which to sit back and watch the world go by.
No trip to Avignon would be complete without a visit to the famous Palais de Papes (Popes' Palace). This enormous palace was home to the popes from 1309-1377, and is today, one of the most important gothic buildings in Europe. For many years however, the Palace was neglected and has only relatively recently become a major tourist attraction. Another must see attraction is Pont d'Avignon. Although only 4 of the original 22 sections survived, the bridge still attracts large crowds.
