Biarritz
Looking out over the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic beyond, western France is a little forgotten by international visitors, but you can get closer to the essence of the French rural soul here.
Almost on the Spanish border, Biarritz is a most excellent beach resort, as its surfer-dude fans would tell you. Its position at the bottom corner of the Bay of Biscay combines with local geography to create some of the best surfing conditions in Europe, making an ideal venue for the annual festival celebrating riding the waves.
Biarritz is also popular with seaside visitors who prefer to just splash about in the shallows. The beaches have been awarded as some of the best Europe – which can make them crowded in high season.
