Located in South East France, Grenoble is surrounded by mountains, and is often referred to as the "Capital of the Alps".
The main tourist site in Grenoble itself is The Bastille, an ancient series of fortifications, sitting on the mountainside. It is visible from all over the city at distance. The Bastille is a good vantage point for viewing the town below and the surrounding mountains.
Most people who arrive in Grenoble though, use it as a gateway to the many Alpine ski resorts which are nearby. The closest is just a 15 minute drive away. The Tour de France is also a frequent visitor as it has many testing alpine climbs close by.
