Lyon
Lyon, the second largest city in France after Paris, and capital of the landlocked Rhone-Alpes region bordering Switzerland. The city has a reputation as a centre of gastronomic excellence – no small accolade in a country that prides itself on eating well, though vegetarians may find they’re not very well catered for.
In 1998 Lyon Town was declared a UNESCO world heritage site, thanks to its profusion of well-preserved medieval and renaissance architecture. A unique feature to old Lyon is the labyrinth of ‘traboules’ – enclosed passageways built in the 18th & 19th centuries to allow the city’s silk industry to move its wares between buildings, safe from the rain. Some traboules are ornately decorated, reflecting civic pride and wealth generated by the industry, with walking tours available for visitors.
