Marseille
Located on France's Mediterranean coast, Marseille is France's oldest city, founded over 2500 years ago by Greek sailors.
Perhaps the best place to start when exploring Marseille is the Vieux Port (Old Port), still an active, bustling fishing port, with freshly caught fish being sold in the open air fish market, and cafes bursting with people chattering and watching the activity. To the west of the fishing port you'll find the forts of St Jean and St Nicolas, spectacularly framing the entrance to the harbour. To the east is the Panier district, a small neighbourhood that clings to the hill and leads to the town hall, through a myriad of narrow alleyways and steep, winding streets.
Marseille is loacated in the Bouches-du-Rhone region, where the Rhone meets the Mediterranean sea. This beautiful stretch of coastline is dotted with quaint fishing villages and pretty beaches, and well worth exploring. Inland, you'll discover typical Provencal scenery, with olive groves, ancient villages, vineyards and mansion houses.
