Berlin
One of the most captivating cities in Europe, Germany's exciting capital is a joy to discover for all ages.
The fusion of outstanding modern architecture with poignant reminders of Berlin's turbulent past has formed a fascinating metropolis that continues to change. This is the heart of Germany, with a stoic beat that echoes through grand public buildings, glorious museums and theatres, urbane restaurants, bustling pubs and raucous nightclubs. The Wall is gone but Berlin is still divided: there's a distinct segue from the glitz of the west to shabby East Berlin.
Today, traffic passes freely under the Brandenburg Gate. It once marked the impenetrable boundary between East and West Berlin until the memorable celebrations in November 1989 when the wall was torn down. Nowadays enterprising scammers sell chunks of Berlin Wall concrete, mostly of dubious authenticity. If the Wall was ever reconstructed from the fragments sold to tourists, it could probably enclose the whole of Germany!
Also worth a visit is the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. It is interesting, with its display of igenious devices employed in escape attempts from the former East Germany.
