Inverness
Inverness has a long history, with evidence of human settlement in the area dating back several thousand years, wonderfully demonstrated at sites such as Clava Cairns, or the Iron Age hill fort of Craig Phadrig.
Often called "the city in the highlands", Inverness nestles in some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery, and has become one of the most-visited places in Scotland. For lovely views of the city, head for the castle, first built in the 12th century, and rebuilt and improved over the years, offers superb views from the hill on which it stands.
For those looking for activity or adventure, Inverness offers a variety of ways in which to enjoy the great outdoors. From white water rafting and sea kayaking, to the drier pursuits of walking and mountain biking. The Cairngorms and Monadhlaith Mountains are easily reached from Inverness, offering beautiful scenery and plenty of activities. While in Inverness, most people make time to visit legendary Loch Ness. The beautiful scenery of Loch Ness will provide you with endless photo opportunities, and even if you don't spot Nessie, you won't be disappointed! On the northern shore is Urquhart Castle. These impressive ruins sit in a lovely position, and are much photographed. As you make your way around Loch Ness, you may notice ropes suspended over the road. These have been installed as red squirrel crossings, to help protect the native population.
