Ever since the concept of the city break was invented, Paris has been, with apologies to New York, “top of the heap”. In a little over one hour from Birmingham you can be gazing at the Eiffel Tower, and even if it’s your tenth or twentieth visit, that sight alone makes you realise Paris is special.
The River Seine defines it, and a cruise is a good way to get started with guided commentary and the chance to enjoy lunch or dinner. The main sights are illuminated at night, including Notre Dame Cathedral, the Champs-Elysées and Arc de Triomphe.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in art, make time to visit the Louvre, probably the world’s most famous gallery with the Mona Lisa is its undisputed gem.
Of course, many visitors come to Paris to sample the world-renowned cuisine. For the best restaurants and traditional brasseries, often known only to locals, avoid the main tourist traps and don’t be afraid to ask! They are smoke-free, too, like most public places in France. Nightlife is the city’s other big plus, especially in the Latin Quarter and Montmartre, the hilltop bohemian zone. Dinner shows of international fame include the Moulin Rouge, Lido and Paradis Latin.
Paris is a city for lovers and for families too. Disneyland Resort Paris is within easy reach of the city by car or by train - there is a direct service to Marne-la-Vallee/Chessy, the station right at the gates of the resort.
