Dubai is a rising star of the Middle East and rapidly becoming a global centre of commerce and tourism. Twice daily flights from Birmingham with Emirates allow convenient direct flights and you can also transfer onwards into the rapidly-growing Emirates network.
A lavish fantasy played out on timeless desert sand, shimmering towers of glass and steel spear into the heavens, while extravagant palm-shaped artificial islands sprawl into the warming embrace of the Persian Gulf. Dubai is the world capital of the extreme, a high-tech engineering wonder of the modern age, where every whim is catered for. It boasts the tallest buildings, most luxurious hotels, most extensive (and expensive) malls and even an indoor ski slope defying the blazing Arabian sun.
At around seven hours from Birmingham, Dubai offers a city break with a difference, more shopping opportunities than New York, warmer beaches than the Balearics and more lavish luxury than the French Riviera. While the Emirate is a Muslim state, there’s a welcoming atmosphere towards western visitors, with a relaxed ‘dress code’ and the consumption of alcohol permitted within designated clubs and hotels.
One of the seven Emirates that make up the UAE, Dubai is a city-state quite unlike any other on the planet. While the image of Dubai is relentlessly futuristic, its past is not entirely forgotten, preserved in the Dubai Museum, based in the Al Fahidi fort, the oldest surviving structure in the Emirate, where scenes from the settlement’s evolution are brought to life through a series of high-tech displays.
What makes Dubai so different to any other city / shopping break is its dual identity as luxurious beach resort. The soft sandy beaches are always immaculately kept, with many of the popular hotels having their own section of beachfront, served by attentive waiters to keep the cooling drinks flowing in the heat of the day.
