Noise Management

Noise Monitoring

  • Operate an advanced noise and track-keeping system to monitor aircraft operations
  • Penalise airlines that infringe our day and night noise violation levels
  • Restrict the type of aircraft and number of operations during the night period
  • Work with our industry partners to manage aircraft noise
  • Implement Noise Preferential Routes for and targets for departing aircraft
  • Prohibit Engine Ground Running during the night period

The Airport and its associated activities produce noise in the air, from aircraft arriving to and departing from the Airport and on the ground, from aircraft taxiing and engine testing. Birmingham Airport recognises the impact its operations have on the local community and is committed to managing its noise impact.

In order to achieve our aim, to minimise the impact of noise on local communities, the Airport Company has established a number of noise policies in line with the requirements of the Section 106 Planning Agreement with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

These policies are summarised in more detail in our Aircraft Noise Management Booklet. To help understand the reasons why aircraft maybe seen in your vicinity, we have also produced an Arriving and Departing Aircraft, Policies and Procedure document. This details the policies and procedures relating to aircraft arriving and departing at Birmingham Airport.

We aim to give members of the public who wish to complain about aircraft noise or related issues an informative, responsive and friendly service. To make a complaint please refer to the Noise Complaints section on our website. We also work alongside the Community Team to deliver our Community Outreach programme, where members of the Environment and Community Teams hold outreach events at local community centres. This gives you the opportunity to meet us in person and discuss any concerns.
