A conversation with...
Security Duty Manager
What did you do prior to joining Birmingham Airport?
I was a security supervisor at Coventry University.
What attracted you to the role?
I wanted to try something different but at the same time build on existing skills and experience.
Tell us about your training?
Well, there certainly was a lot to learn. Before I could even step foot into the Passenger Search Area I had to learn the basics of Aviation Security. Now I am at an advanced level but this does not mean the training stops. It is a continuous process with yearly refreshers.
So what’s a typical day for you then?
That’s the beauty of my job, there is no typical day. My role is so varied. One minute I could be in a meeting and the next I could be on the airfield dealing with a security issue or monitoring the processing of a VIP flight.
What advice would you give for potential new recruits?
There are a lot of rules and regulations that need to be adhered to but at the same time you have to be able to think on your feet and offer the highest standards of customer service. Be prepared to be flexible, busy and expect the unexpected.
So what do you like best about your job?
There is something very special about working in the world of aviation, I love working as part of a team and I like the fact that no day is ever the same....Just think ash cloud!!
And what qualities are the most beneficial?
You need to be a strong manager, a team player, a quick thinker and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people throughout the airport.
Are there opportunities to develop in your career?
Yes there are many opportunities to progress throughout the airport.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining BHX?
It’s a great place to work!
