Birmingham Airport has released its 2009 passenger figures and revealed that its top three destinations last year were Dublin, Dubai and Amsterdam.
Overall, it handled 9,109,189 in 2009, a fall of 5.5% compared to the previous year. This was a trend seen throughout the industry due to the current economic downturn.
Some 7,025,369 people used scheduled flights in 2009, 77.1% of the total figure. The top three scheduled destinations were Dublin, Dubai and Amsterdam.
Charter traffic accounted for 22.9% of the total figure with 2,083,820 people using these services last year. The top three charter destinations were Palma, Dalaman and Tenerife.
Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s CEO said, “2009 was a challenging year for the industry and we’re expecting another difficult year ahead with consumer confidence still at a low. Nevertheless, there are some exciting developments planned for 2010 to improve our passenger experience, which will allow us to come out of the downturn in a stronger and more competitive position to achieve the Airport’s vision of doubling its passenger numbers by 2018.
“In the meantime, we’re told by our customers that their summer holiday is the last thing they’d be willing to sacrifice so we expect a higher percentage of people to book package deals in 2010, particularly to countries outside of the euro zone, like Turkey and Egypt.
“Our advice to travellers is give yourself something to look forward to and book now while deals are available, as it’s unlikely that there’ll be much late availability nearer to the summer season. Many operators are offering ‘book now pay later’ deals so visit your local travel agent or go on line to get a good price and to avoid disappointment.”
The year ended with 551,273 passengers travelling through Birmingham in December, either jetting off to warmer climes or spending the Christmas period with loved ones.
Despite the overall fall of 7.9% in December, there were a number of destinations which saw growth. Scheduled traffic that grew included Instanbul (+107%), Arrecife (+62.9%), Tenerife (61.2%), Pisa (+43.7%), Gerona (+42%), Krakow (+29.7%), Hanover (+28.5%) and Faro (+25.3%).
Charter passenger growth in December was seen to the Dominican Republic (+344.1%), Cyprus (+223.3%), Barbados (+44%), Egypt (+30.8%), Cape Verde (+23.1%) and Italy (+21.4%).
