The Best of British

Best of British at Birmingham Airport

World Duty Free

One of the biggest events of 2016 is Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday. Though her actual birthday was on April 21st, she held her official birthday celebrations on June 11th, as is the tradition. As a public figure, the Queen is synonymous with Britain, and many of her personal hobbies are deeply British as well – thoroughbred horseracing, countryside walking and Scottish country dancing.

Departure Lounge

To celebrate the Queen’s birthday, we’ve rounded up the best British products available at Birmingham Airport, to inspire some patriotic eating, drinking and shopping on your next trip.

British Food

Wetherspoon is another place to get your British culinary fix.  Share a plate of haggis bites with whisky dipping sauce or order a British beef and ale pie. If you’re craving a burger, get the delicious rarebit burger, a 6oz patty drenched in rarebit sauce made with Cheddar cheese, British amber ale, Worcestershire sauce and English mustard. For dessert, don’t miss the Eton mess or the sticky toffee pudding, both served with Jersey clotted cream ice cream.

Wetherspoon is located after security in the departure lounge.

For a very local taste of Britain, head to The Meriden, where all their sausages are sourced from Aubrey Allen, a Warwickshire family-owned butchery. Or try their beer battered fish and chips, made with beer from Warwickshire craft brewery, the Purity Brewing Company.

The Meriden Bar & Restaurant is located after security in the departure lounge.

All Bar One

At All Bar One, you can enjoy British cuisine at every meal. Try their classic Full English breakfast with Cumberland and damson sausages, or their Protein Power Up breakfast with smoked salmon from the Severn and Wye smokery situated on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean. At lunch or dinner, you can’t go wrong with fish and chips, served of course with mushy peas and tartare sauce.

All Bar One has two locations – before security at the check in area and after security within the south lounge gates.

British Drinks

The Meriden

In a display of taste rare for an airport bar, many of The Meriden’s cask ales are from local breweries, including the award-winning sustainable Purity Brewing Company in Warwickshire.

For an even wider selection of British beverages, head to Wetherspoon. Their drinks menu is filled with craft beers and ciders from England and Scotland, including Curious Brew, Meantime Brewing, BrewDog, Orchard Pig and Hazy Hog. For a stronger tipple, try the Black Cow vodka from Dorset, the Portobello Road gin from Notting Hill or the Edinburgh gin from the Scottish capital. If whisky is more your style, try one of the Scottish malts on offer; the smoky Laphroaig and the mellow Glenmorangie are highly recommended.

British Brands

Support British brands with your tax free airport shopping. It may be inspired by Japanese street culture, but Superdry is a British-owned, British-run brand. Graphic prints, comfy fabrics and sports references feature heavily in their range, which includes denim, hoodies, t-shirts, outerwear and accessories. High Street favourite Next sells men’s, women’s and kid’s clothes for all occasions. If you’re travelling for business, this is the perfect place to pick up emergency tights, cufflinks and ties.

Next and Superdry are both located after security in the departure lounge.

The Watch Collection

Never miss a flight again with a classic timepiece from British brand Accurist, one of many designer brands available at The Watch Collection. Accurist has been manufacturing quality watches since 1946, always showcasing the best of British design and craftsmanship.

The Watch Collection is located after security in the departure lounge.

World Duty Free

Bring a bit of home with you on holiday by picking up some British snacks at World Duty Free. Buying a tin of Twinings or Fortnum and Mason tea means that you’re never far from a proper cuppa, no matter where you’re traveling. Made with pure creamery butter, Walkers Shortbread is a thoroughly Scottish treat, down to its famous tartan packaging. It makes a great gift if you’re visiting friends abroad, assuming you don’t eat it all on the plane.

World Duty Free has three locations – a walk-through store right after security, at arrivals after baggage reclaim and after security at the south lounge gates.
