Staff Travel

Birmingham Airport is committed to encouraging employees to travel to work in a sustainable way and by supporting employees in getting to work by public transport. As part of the Airport’s runway extension project, the Airport Company is committed to reducing the number of employees who travel to work by private car, with a requirement for a minimum of 37% of staff to travel by a non-car mode. We have therefore introduced a number of initiatives to encourage all employees who work at the airport to use more sustainable modes of transport

Employee Car Sharing Scheme

Birmingham Airport offers a car sharing scheme to all staff who work on-site at the airport. The scheme is free to join and helps match you with people who live in your area, driving the same route to work. Great benefits to the scheme include petrol money savings, meeting new people and a 'guarantee to get you home' pledge by the company to ensure if there is a family emergency or illness where your driver has to leave early without you, the company will pay to get you home.

The Airport’s on-site mainline rail station, Birmingham International, provides direct services to 45 stations from its on-site rail station - making it the country’s best connected airport and an ideal way for passengers and staff get to and from the airport. Birmingham Airport has therefore joined forces with Centro and Travel West Midlands to bring employees of Birmingham Airport savings on bus and rail costs when they take out an annual pass. The pass is purchased by the Airport Company and the employee needs to pay back the cost of the pass, minus the discount, on a monthly basis at an agreed amount. Click here for further information.

Travel by Bike

We actively encourage employees to cycle to work as it is more sustainable than most other modes of transport. There are approximately 60 cycle storage lockers provided for employees at the airport, 30 of which are located behind Diamond House and the remaining 30 are found on the corner of Trident Road and Comet Road. As well as the lockers, there are also 4 Sheffield stands which provide an extra 8 spaces for staff and visitors to utilise.

Birmingham Airport has also joined forces with ‘CycleScheme’, an operator of Cycle2Work schemes across the UK, which boasts 98% coverage of all independent cycle shops in the country. Cycle2Work is a HMRC approved scheme, which enables Birmingham Airport employees to hire/ purchase a bike, which is paid through salary over a twelve month period.
