Issue with Swissport Ground Operations

Birmingham Airport can confirm that ground handler, Swissport, is at times experiencing staffing issues which are intermittently impacting on the operation and passengers.

Swissport has employed a number of additional staff but passengers may suffer delays, particularly in baggage reclaim.

We apologise to our customers and understand their frustration but reassure them that Birmingham Airport is doing everything in its power to support the operation through contingencies and additional resource.

Passengers should feedback concerns to their airline, which contracts Swissport to provide ground services. A list of airlines can be found here

Drop Off Car Park (30 minutes free):

This 135 space car park is just 400 metres from the terminal and is free for drivers dropping off for 30 minutes. It's within easy walking distance to the terminal and can be reached by foot via a dedicated footpath in just five to ten minutes. There is also a regular free bus service between car park and terminal.

Access is gained via a dedicated entrance lane on Airport Way, the main approach road to the terminal, and is clearly signposted. On entry, drivers should take a ticket from the barrier, drop off their passengers and simply redeem the ticket at the exit barrier. Should drivers stay beyond the 30 minutes free period, payments can either be made via contactless pay machines at the exit barrier or before getting to the barrier via cash machines within the car park. The charge beyond the free period is £5 per each five minute period.

Drivers who are picking up passengers are still advised to use car parks 1, 2 and 3 as the 30 minutes free Drop Off facility may not provide enough time for this activity should passengers be delayed through the arrivals process. Car parks 1, 2 and 3 are only a short two minute walk from the arrivals gate and the tariffs start from £4.90 for up to one hour.

There is a ‘no return within one hour’ policy in place. There is no vehicle height restriction; however, coaches are not permitted and advised to use the dedicated Coach Park provided on site.

Blue Badge parking bays are provided; however, the Airport advises blue badge holders to use the Premium Set Down car park adjacent to the terminal where they are entitled to 60 minutes free parking. All car parks served by busses have special assistance provision.

Premium Set Down:

This car park is located adjacent to the terminal building and has recently been redeveloped to improve the access and flow of traffic around the car park. Contactless payment is available at all exits as well as via cash/card payment machines within the car park. This tariff starts from £2 for 10 minutes. Oldbury Viaduct Works

A major concrete repair and waterproofing scheme has started on the M5 Oldbury Viaduct between junctions 1 and 2. This is planned to be completed by Autumn 2018. We advise passengers arriving from this direction to leave extra time to get to the airport. Click here for more details.

Despite this positive effort, the Airport regrets to inform passengers travelling through Birmingham that they may suffer delays, particularly in baggage reclaim.
