Arriving at Banjul Airport (BJL)

When flying into Banjul, the capital city of The Gambia, you will fly into Banjul International Airport, also known as Yundum International Airport, which is approximately 26 kilometres from the city centre.

There are options to get you to and from the airport, including car rental, taxis, shuttles and buses.

It’s important to note that airport taxis do not have a meter and instead have a fixed rate indicated outside the terminal.

What to expect

Banjul, is located on an island at the mouth of the Gambia River, meaning a river cruise is a must-do when visiting.

Allocate at least two days for a river cruise where you can see hippos and various bird species. For more wildlife take a ferry over to Senegal for the Fathala Wildlife Park where you catch a glimpse of Giraffes, Rhions, Antelopes, Zebras and Buffaloes.

If you fancy something a little more relaxing head to the coastal town of Kololi for its beautiful gold-sand beaches.

Culture in Banjul

Banjul is known for its wildlife, stunning beaches, and friendly and hospitable local communities. Modest dress is recommended, especially in local markets and rural areas.

Gambian cuisine is built around rice-based dishes, with favourites like Benachin (Jollof rice) and Domoda (peanut stew) taking centre stage.

While you’re there, be sure to sample Chura (a local beer) or Attaya (sweet mint tea), both of which are key to the country’s social traditions
