Arriving at Beijing
Your flight will land at one of Beijing's two main international airports: Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), the long-standing primary hub, or the newer Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). Both airports are major international gateways and are well-connected to the city centre.
Flights to Beijing can vary in length depending on which airline and connection you choose.
If you arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), the most efficient way to get into the city is by the Airport Express train. This line connects all three terminals to two central subway stations in about 20 minutes. A taxi is also a convenient option, but also the most expensive option to leave the airport, and these can be easily found outside of the airport.
For those arriving at Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), the Daxing Airport Express line is one of the most cost effective and fastest route, offering a direct connection to the city's subway network, out of the airport and to the city centre.
For those who prefer to travel at their own pace, car hire is another fantastic option to explore the city. You will find plenty of options from both PEK and PKX airports.

What to expect in Beijing
Beijing is just an incredible city, fly from Birmingham to Beijing and experience a massive place that feels like a huge open-air museum nixed with a super modern capital all at once!
Did you know that the Great Wall of China is not a single, continuous wall but a vast system of different walls and forts? And that Beijing is also the only city in the world to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics? The Chinese capital is a place where you can walk through the heart of China's imperial past one moment and find yourself in a futuristic architectural wonder the next.
Fun and must-do activities in Beijing include:
Walk the Great Wall: A trip to Beijing isn't complete without a visit to the Great Wall. The most popular sections for tourists are Badaling and Mutianyu, which offer breathtaking views and a chance to experience this architectural marvel first-hand.
Explore the Forbidden City: Step back into the Ming and Qing dynasties by wandering through the magnificent Forbidden City, the former imperial palace and now a vast museum complex. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest ancient palace in the world.
Discover the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace: These imperial gardens are not only beautiful but also culturally significant. The Temple of Heaven is where emperors prayed for good harvests, while the Summer Palace is a stunning example of traditional Chinese garden design.
Taste the local cuisine: Beijing is a food lover's paradise. Make sure to try authentic Peking duck, which is a city specialty. Also, explore local street food, including skewers, jianbing (savoury crepes) or sweet Tanghulu.
Wander through the hutongs: These are Beijing's traditional alleyways and courtyards, which offer a glimpse into the city's traditional way of life. Taking a rickshaw ride through these narrow lanes is a great way to experience their charm.
When travelling to Beijing and around China, since Google, Instagram and Whatsapp is restricted in the country, this means downloading local alternatives. Be sure to download and set up Alipay for payment options and WeChat for communications for when you arrive. Apple Maps is a good familiar alternative for navigating around the city, however more local alternatives like Amap (also known as Gaode) should be considered. A translation app can also come in handy when travelling.
Culture in Beijing
Chinese culture is deeply rooted in tradition and respect, especially for elders and the concept of "guanxi" (building relationships), is very important in daily life.
Politeness and respect are key. Be mindful of queueing, and use both hands when giving or receiving items, especially business cards or gifts. When eating, it's considered polite to try everything, but don't feel pressured to finish your plate as leaving a little food signifies that your host has provided more than enough. Tipping is not a customary practice in most restaurants and taxis.
