What to Expect in Sydney

Sydney combines the buzz of a large city with a lifestyle centred around the outdoors - surfing, swimming and beach barbecues are all engrained in Sydneysider culture. As home to one of Australia's most diverse populations, the city also prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere, so expect friendly locals and casual conversations with strangers.

Smoking is not permitted in many public spaces in Sydney and New South Wales and violations can result in fines of up to $300. It's always worth doublechecking specific smoking restrictions in any venue you visit.

No visit to the Harbour City is complete without, of course, visiting the world-famous sail shaped Sydney Opera House. Located on the shore of Sydney Harbour, visitors can take a guided walking tour of the venue or attend one of the dozens of weekly music performances to truly enjoy the striking expressionist plywood interior of the Concert Hall as it was designed to be experienced.

If you're seeking a dose of Sydney's renowned surf culture then a trip to Bondi Beach is a must with stunning clifftop walks, serene ocean pools and a weekly local craft market. Never surfed before? Grom's (Australian slang for beginner surfer) can learn how to catch waves at one of Bondi's many surf schools - all equipment provided!

For those visiting with family, consider a visit to Luna Park, a wholly unusual but yet nostalgic theme park that has a solidified place in the hearts of many locals. Opened in 1935, the carnivalesque park has a range of traditional rides including the Big Dipper, the Ferris Wheel and Sledgehammer.
