Sunny skies ahead - Your ultimate summer holiday prep guide!

Share:

Summer is just around the corner, and for many, that means one thing: it’s holiday time! Whether you’re booked for a sun-soaked beach getaway, a vibrant city break, or adventurous mountain escapes, a little preparation goes a long way to ensure a smooth and stress-free trip.

Here's our essential guide to getting ready for your summer travels:

1. Smart packing

Packing can be a daunting task, but with a few clever tricks, you'll be a pro in no time.

  • Make a list (and check it twice!) - Before you even open your suitcase, jot down everything you think you'll need. Group items by category (e.g., clothes, toiletries, electronics, documents). This helps prevent last-minute panic and forgotten essentials.

  • Roll don't fold - Rolling your clothes tightly saves space and can help minimise wrinkles.

  • Consider utilising packing cubes - These handy organisers are a game-changer! They compress your belongings and keep everything neatly grouped, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging.

  • Travel sized toiletries – You can save space by transferring your favourite products into travel-sized containers.

  • Remember to leave some room for souvenirs - You'll likely pick up some treasures on your trip, so ensure you have a little extra space in your luggage for them.

CRUCIAL PACKING ALERT: Vapes, e-cigarettes and devices with lithium batteries

This is super important for your safety and to avoid any delays to your trip. NEVER pack vapes, e-cigarettes or devices containing lithium-ion batteries (such as DSLR cameras) in your hold luggage (checked bags). Whilst the majority of airlines permit such items to be carried in your cabin baggage (carry-on), some airlines do not. Always check the ability to carry e-cigarettes or vapes within their cabins, with your airline. Contact details of all the airlines that operate at Birmingham Airport can be found in our Airline Directory.

2. Getting to the Airport: Plan your journey

Don't leave your airport transfer to the last minute! Consider your options:

  • Public transport: There are buses and trains that offer direct routes to Birmingham Airport. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. Find out more about the transport links to BHX here.

  • Taxi/ride sharing – This is a convenient door-to-door service, especially if you have a lot of luggage or an early flight. Book in advance to secure your ride and potentially a better price.

  • Driving and parking - If you plan to drive and park at the airport, pre-book your airport parking well in advance, especially during peak summer months. This often secures you a better rate and guarantees a space. Factor in plenty of time for traffic and finding your parking spot. Find and book your parking here.

3. Airport facilities: Making your journey smoother

Airports are bustling hubs, but they offer a range of facilities to make your journey more comfortable.

Assisted Travel - If you or someone in your party require assistance during your airport journey, it is essential to prebook assisted travel services with your airline or tour operator. If however, you couldn’t prebook at the time of booking, then you must contact your airline or tour operator, with at least 48 hours’ notice prior to your departure or arrival flight time. This allows them to make the necessary arrangements and ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for you. Don't wait until you get to the airport to request this service as it cannot be guaranteed if all customer agents and equipment are out with pre-booked and notified passengers.

Find out more about our Assisted Travel service here.

Checking-in - Your airline will have its own check-in times; therefore you should arrive to the airport in line with your airline’s advice. This information can be found on your booking.

For Jet2 and TUI travellers, consider utilising the Twilight/ Day before bag drop to help make your experience at the airport smoother. More information and T&Cs for Twilight/ Day before bag drop can be found here.

If you don’t need to check-in your hold luggage and you have already checked in online, head straight to security.

Security – when you’re here, please leave all compliant liquids and electricals in your hand-luggage and please remove any belts.

Dining and shopping - Once you're through security, you'll find a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes to enjoy before your flight. A directory of shops and restaurants at Birmingham Airport can be found here.

Lounges - If you're looking for a quieter space to relax, work, or grab a bite, consider booking access to an airport lounge. You can turn up on the day, but booking ahead secures your spot! Find out more about our lounges here.

By taking a little time to plan and prepare, you can sit back, relax, and look forward to a truly unforgettable summer holiday. Happy travels!
