Birmingham Airport opens doors for care-experienced young adults
For the second year running, Birmingham Airport (BHX) has welcomed care-experienced young adults to its site, providing opportunities to develop workplace skills, grow in confidence and discover potential career paths.
The initiative is delivered through the West Midlands Employer Alliance, a network of organisations dedicated to improving employment outcomes for young people with care experience.
Alongside fellow members of the Alliance, BHX has supported five young adults this year, building on the success of last year’s programme, where three participants went on to secure permanent roles within the airport’s HR, IT and Customer Experience teams.
Over the past two weeks, this year’s group gained an insight into life behind the scenes at the airport, spending time with the Fire Service, Communications, Security, Airfield Safety, HR and Air Traffic Control teams to see how different roles help keep operations running safely and efficiently.
Antoinette Farrell-Jones, People Director at Birmingham Airport, said, “It has been a privilege to welcome and support these young adults over the last two weeks. They have been curious, shown enthusiasm and thrown themselves into every experience. We hope they leave knowing there are many different career paths open to them, and I sincerely hope that some of them will return to Birmingham Airport as colleagues in the months and years ahead.”
To mark the end of the placement, the airport hosted a graduation ceremony, bringing participants and BHX colleagues together to recognise and celebrate everything the group had achieved during the programme.
The initiative forms part of BHX’s ongoing commitment to supporting local communities and creating meaningful pathways into employment for young people across the region.
