Girona and Pisa will be added to Ryanair’s Birmingham (BHX) routes from summer 2023, the Irish carrier announced today.

Ryanair also plans to add a sixth aircraft to its BHX-based fleet next summer - a major commitment to the West Midlands transport hub which will create 180 direct jobs and support a total of 1,700 local jobs.

This expansion takes Ryanair’s total investment in BHX to $600m ($100m per based aircraft) and the destinations on offer to customers to 42.

Ryanair’s Birmingham summer 2023 schedule includes:

  • six based aircraft - two of which will be Boeing 737 8-200 “Gamechanger” aircraft

  • 42 routes including two new ones - Girona and Pisa

  • More than 350 flights a week from BHX

  • Increased frequencies on 10 routes including Bergamo, Dublin, Madrid, Porto, and Palma

Eddie Wilson, Ryanair’s chief executive, speaking from BHX, said: “Our record-breaking Summer’23 schedule supports the tourism recovery and local economy with over 1,700 high-paid local jobs.”

Nick Barton, BHX chief executive, added: "We are so thrilled Ryanair is significantly expanding its Birmingham offering. Basing a sixth aircraft here will increase options for customers, create jobs and boost the West Midlands economy."

Boeing “gamechanger” aircraft can carry 4% more passengers while burning 16% less fuel with 40% less noise.
